Wagenknecht alliance wants to govern – also with the Left Party

Pure protest party – or more? The future Wagenknecht party wants to govern, says frontwoman Amira Mohamed Ali. Only the AfD is out of the question as a partner. She does not want to rule out peace negotiations with Putin.

The chairwoman of the newly founded “Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht” association, Amira Mohamed Ali, is open to coalitions with the Left, her previous party. “We are not ruling out any coalition, apart from the AfD,” said Mohamed Ali in the “ntv Frühstart”, one day after she left the Left Party along with Wagenknecht and eight other members of the Bundestag. It has to be about the content. We certainly won’t work with the AfD alone. “But otherwise we are very open about it.” She does not see the new alliance as a protest party and has announced that she wants to govern. “Of course, we want to help shape it.” You are in politics to change things concretely.

The previous left-wing parliamentary group leader Mohamed Ali is chairwoman of the association, which is intended as a precursor to a party led by Sahra Wagenknecht. The club’s management presented the plans on Monday. Mohamed Ali and the nine other ex-left MPs will be leaving the parliamentary group for the foreseeable future. This will mean that they will lose their faction status and jobs will probably disappear.

The Wagenknecht supporter rejected criticism of her actions. The Basic Law states that members of parliament are free in their mandate. Gregor Gysi, who criticized the apostates’ behavior as “immoral”, should also know this as a lawyer, said Mohamed Ali. “In this respect, I think this moral debate is a bit misguided at this point.” Above all, we should talk about the fact that the left is in such a bad position because of what they see as the wrong course of the party leadership. This policy led to the current situation.

“Only demands for even more weapons”

The Wagenknecht supporter renewed her criticism of the traffic light coalition’s foreign policy. “It is urgently necessary for the federal government to consistently advocate for diplomacy.” So far, Germany has not taken part in diplomatic initiatives, for example from the Global South, in the Ukraine war. “Instead, all I hear is calls for more weapons.” Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is spreading slogans of perseverance and calling for the Russian army to be weakened first.

We have to start breaking out of military logic in Ukraine. “The alternative is this: the war of attrition continues, people continue to die every day or you try to take a different path.” According to Mohamed Ali, Ukraine cannot decide for Ukraine whether it will cede territory to Russia for a peace agreement. She also cannot assess whether it is even possible to negotiate with Russian President Putin. However, minor negotiation successes have already been achieved with Russia, for example in the grain agreement or prisoner exchange.
