Summer time is berry time. That means: There are finally fresh raspberries and blueberries from regional cultivation again. Unfortunately, these are not always convincing. Stiftung Warentest finds mold and yeast in many supermarket berries and therefore recommends frozen goods. In the video you can see how not to eat frozen berries.
Who can resist sweet fruits? Raspberries and blueberries simply tempt you to snack. That’s why fresh raspberries and blueberries usually smile at us right at the beginning of the shopping round in the supermarket. However, because they have always been associated with hepatitis pathogens and noroviruses, Stiftung Warentest wanted to know for sure and took the fine fruits under the microscope. They are susceptible to mold – unlike frozen berries.

No viruses in fresh raspberries – but molds
The testers can give the all-clear: They found no such viruses – and no salmonella or listeria. In a test with 29 fresh and frozen products, only fresh raspberries were susceptible to spoilage germs, according to the magazine “test” (issue 6/2021). Mold or yeast was detected in four of the six packs tested. There was then only the judgment “sufficient”. Therefore, the recommendation of the testers is: Only buy raspberries without fault and blame. They should shine, have no pressure points and be transported in the cool bag.

Fresh blueberries perform better: Nevertheless, pollutants instead of mold
Things are looking better for the blueberries: Stiftung Warentest had no problems with the microbiological quality here. But she pointed out pollutants in a few portions, such as those from Aldi Nord, Lidl or Berry fresh. Again, frozen berries are better than fresh.

Frozen berries better than fresh: more than half is recommended
Overall, the microbiological test result for more than half of the 29 products was “good” or “very good”. The frontrunners are the frozen organic blueberries from Lidl (Bio Organic for 76 cents/100 g) and Kaufland (K-Bio for 76 cents/100 g) as well as the fresh cultivated blueberries from conventional cultivation by Lidl (1 euro/100 g) and Aldi Nord (nature favorites (1.03 euros/100 g).
