Mom: So the show goes on without Anna Faris

The series "Mom" has started in its eighth season – without actress Anna Faris. That's what happened to her character Christy.

The fans of the series "Mom" found out at the start of the eighth season what happened to Anna Faris' (43) character Christy. The actress surprisingly announced in September that she would not be returning to the sitcom.

Warning, spoilers

According to the US magazine "People", the new episode started with a scene in which Bonnie (Allison Janney) and her husband Adam (William Fichtner) can be seen. The couple has just come from the airport, where they dropped Christy, who is off to the east coast to study law. And Bonnie explains that she's doing really well: after all, every mother dreams of the day she drops her 42-year-old daughter at the airport so that she can go to school, she jokes. She later reveals that Christy was accepted into Georgetown Law School on a scholarship.

In an interview with "Entertainment Weekly", showrunner Gemma Baker had already revealed that Christy would "live on" despite Faris' departure. Although there have been deaths on the TV show in the past, it was never an option for Christy, she said. After seven years, this loss would have been too devastating for the audience and the other series characters: "It was important to us that Christy moves on to bigger things." Christy had been working on her dreams for some time "and we have a feeling the audience will be happy for her". The series will continue to provide information about what she's up to and what it's doing with Bonnie, it said.

"It's a great loss"

Allison Janney (60) said in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" before the season started: "It is a great loss for the series not to have Anna because she was part of a character, Christy, that everyone fell in love with was so lovable and warm and gullible and funny and which we will miss so much. " The actress added, "I think I'll miss Bonnie and Christy's relationship the most, even if it still lasts. But she won't be there. I'll miss that."

According to US media reports, the cast and crew of the series were surprised by Anna Faris' exit. At the beginning of September she announced that she wanted to break new ground. In a statement, she said that the past few years with "Mom" had been among the most fulfilling and enriching of her career. She said she was so grateful to the writers and producers as well as to her "great fellow actors" for making such a "wonderful work experience" possible. For her, the journey as an actress continues. She wants to "pursue new opportunities", but also keep her fingers crossed for her television family.
