Monsters on Netflix: is this anime the prequel to One Piece?

What should we expect from the anime “MONSTERS: Hell of the Flying Dragon of 103 Passions”, to be discovered in simultaneous broadcast on the Netflix and ADN platforms?

On January 13, the One Piece anime made its big debut on Netflix with the arrival of episodes of the new story arc “Egg Head”. But fans of the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy are not at the end of their surprises, since a completely new prequel arrives on the platform this Sunday, January 21.

Entitled MONSTERS: Hell of the Flying Dragon of 103 Passions, this mini-series is the adaptation of a short story published by Eiichiro Oda in the early 90s. This one-shot available in the anthology Wanted! (editions Glénat) was imagined a few years before the creation of the flagship manga: One Piece (also by Glénat).

This short story follows the story of the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma, saved from starvation by a young woman, who decides to come to the aid of her village by slaying the dragon that is terrorizing the inhabitants. Although the publication of this manga predates that of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda nevertheless decided to connect the two works within the same universe.

Netflix’s many projects around One Piece

Thus, Ryuma appeared in One Piece during the Thriller Bark story arc. The latter, however, did not appear in his true form, but as an undead brought back to life by Gecko Moria, via the Moria powers of the Shadow Fruit. And his physical resemblance to Roronoa Zoro is no coincidence, since Ryuma is a distant ancestor of the swordsman from the Straw Hat Crew!

Among the projects developed by Netflix around the One Piece franchise, let us recall the filming this year of season 2 of the live-action series. But also the broadcast on an unknown date of The One Piece, a reboot of the animated series produced by the WIT studio (the first seasons of Attack on Titan).

The anime MONSTERS: Hell of the Flying Dragon of 103 Passions can be found on Netflix and ADN, and every Tuesday evening on the J-One channel.
