Vitalik Buterin became a citizen of Montenegro
Vitalik Buterin, illustrious co-founder of Ethereum (ETH) has become citizen of Montenegro, a Balkan country. According to official announcements relayed by Radio Televizija Crne Gore (RTCG), the nation’s public radio, Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić and Finance Minister Milojko Spajić are behind the initiative. The authorities of Montenegro specify:
“Interior Minister Sergej Sekulović, recognizing the importance of this initiative, took the decision to admit Vitalik Buterin to Montenegrin citizenship on the proposal of the Prime Minister, and today he received a Montenegrin passport”.
Ethereum co-founder received Montenegrin citizenship duringa visit organized by the Minister of Finance from the country. Several players in the cryptocurrency sector indeed visited Montenegrin soil at the request of the government at the beginning of April 2022.

Montenegro Commits to Becoming a Blockchain Leader
As part of this visit, a series of conferences and meetings between the leaders of Montenegro and blockchain experts were organized. During a panel, Vitalik Buterin notably advised the government to put in place a legislative framework around crypto-assets.
Moreover, Montenegro states that it endeavors “to establish a legislative framework that will allow the best use of this technology and contribute to the growth of the gross domestic product”.
According to Milojko Spajić’s comments relayed by the Mina press agency, the country’s future regulatory framework will facilitate investments while protecting investors from criminals. He specifies :
“We want to create a law, better than the best law that currently exists in the world. […] We will enable anyone with innovative ideas and the will to bring them to fruition, to use new and alternative sources of funding.”.
The co-founder of Ethereum also encouraged the Montenegrin power to educate the youngest about blockchain.
Vitalik Buterin’s access to citizenship is part of a broad campaign to make Montenegro one of the blockchain leaders. The country’s new government, which came to power in February 2022, has indeed pledged to promote blockchain on its territory for attract billions of euros in investment and create thousands of well-paying jobs for our young people”.
The administration of Montenegro considers it essential to collaborate with experts from the world of cryptocurrencies in order to “contribute to the development of the Montenegrin economy, attract investment and create well-paid jobs in this industry”.
Mirroring many countries, including Ukraine and El Salvador, Montenegro wants to take advantage of the enthusiasm for digital assets to boost its economyhighly dependent on the tourism and construction sectors.
