Moon Breathing: No more sleepless nights

Fall asleep quickly and wake up refreshed? Some can only dream of it. The breathing technique "Moon Breathing" can help.

One sheep, two sheep, three sheep … the ticking of the clock gets louder and louder, the ringing of the alarm clock is getting closer and we cannot sleep. Yoga can help. With a special technique you should be able to breathe yourself into sleep easily and quickly. That's behind "Moon Breathing".

Yoga friends may have heard of the special breathing technique before. "Chandra Bhedana" is a popular relaxation technique. "Chandra" translated means moon. The word "Bhedana" can be translated as "break through". The moon breathing should help to get back in harmony with yourself and the environment.

This is how moon breathing works

The best way to make yourself comfortable is sitting cross-legged (or lying directly in bed) with your back straight, your shoulders relaxed, your eyes closed. Right index and middle fingers press on the palm of the hand and the thumb closes the right nostril. Then take a deep breath through the left nostril and pause for a moment. The thumb releases the right nostril and the right index finger closes the left nostril. Now exhale slowly through the right nostril. Important: Exhaling should take longer than breathing. The process is repeated ten times.

By the way: You should always breathe in through your left nostril. This is because the left side is connected to our parasympathetic nervous system. This lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, which are essential for a good night's sleep. Moon breathing can not only help with falling asleep problems. Even those who feel stressed, agitated or restless should try the yoga breathing technique.
