More 911s than ever – Old values, new strength: Porsche’s anniversary year

Porsche celebrates 75 years of founding the company and 60 years of the 911. There are more models than ever before from the sports car icon.

Did its creator Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche (1935-2012) foresee it? We do not know it. When the Porsche 911 celebrated its world premiere on September 12, 1963 at the IAA in Frankfurt, this was the beginning of a triumphal procession that has continued to this day. 15 years earlier, on June 8, 1948, Butzi’s father Ferry (1909-1998) received the individual approval for it the first Porsche, the 356/1 Roadster. This date marks the creation of a car brand that is now the most profitable in the world. The premium manufacturer also occupies top positions in international rankings in terms of brand value (approx. 34 billion US dollars) and strength. And in the luxury label category, it is the undisputed No. 1 anyway. Today, the former sports car manufacturer has a wide product range with six model series, including two SUVs and one purely electric car. But the Porsche classic par excellence is the nine-eleven: the basics of the design since the original 911, the brand icon is squeezed out wherever and however it can. There are now no fewer than 26 models of the eighth generation, some of them limited, on offer, from coupés and convertibles to the Targa, many of them with a choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. There are 17 editions of the Carrera alone, four of the Turbos and four of the GT3 3 in total, one from the SC and one from the superior derivative Dakar as well. Not counting: the model-specific options between dual-clutch and manual transmission. 1.1 million nine-elevens since market launch In the sixty years since market launch, around 1.1 million units of the automotive legend have been sold. In Austria, the 911 has been the most sought-after Porsche model again for two years. The return to old values initiated in the early 1990s – timeless form, striking driving dynamics, maximum precision – soon led to new strengths in the 911, engine-wise anyway, but above all commercially. Comparable to a Rolex: highly coveted, not always readily available, extremely stable in value. Each new model is once again a source of fascination. No. 27 will follow soon and is called ST. And number 28 is said to be a mildly hybridized 911 (2024).Detlev Schürr
