Kyiv can hope for more artillery pieces

While the Russian units are launching their long-awaited offensive in eastern Ukraine, the government in Kyiv can count on further Western-made weapons. In addition to Great Britain, the USA and Canada also want to send more artillery pieces to the country.
Several western states want to support Kyiv with additional artillery in the fight against the Russian invasion. In London, the British government announced in the afternoon that it would deliver more guns to Ukraine. “This is becoming an artillery conflict,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson told MPs in London. Ukraine will need additional artillery to help. “That’s what we’re going to give them, in addition to many other forms of support.”
In addition, Great Britain is examining options for supplying missiles for attacks on ships. Among other things, it will be looked at whether “Brimstone” rockets can be mounted on vehicles, Johnson explained. Other options would also be explored. The missiles are usually fired from fighter jets. According to the manufacturer MBDA, however, they can also be used against targets on land and at sea.
According to President Joe Biden, the United States and Great Britain also want to supply more artillery pieces to Ukraine. After speaking with other leaders, Biden replied “yes” to a related question. Canada also announced the delivery of heavy artillery. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said more details would be announced shortly.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced in the evening that the delivery of military material was being coordinated closely with the allies. He pointed out that the US and the Netherlands are sending artillery to Ukraine. However, the SPD politician did not speak of a direct delivery of heavy weapons from Germany. In government circles it was pointed out that Germany could provide ammunition or training for Ukraine. Except for mortars, the Bundeswehr does not have the necessary number of self-propelled howitzers, for example, to be able to hand them over, it said.
