What is it about ?
From the Louvre to Buckingham Palace, from the underbelly of Paris to the siege of La Rochelle… In a Kingdom divided by religious wars and threatened with invasion by England, a handful of men and women will cross their swords and link their destiny to that of France.
The Three Musketeers are back, with Milady! If you liked the first part, successfully released in April 2023, you will like this one, which is in its right line, as its team confirms to us on the microphone.
“Milady is the direct sequel to D’Artagnan. We pick up where we left off the first because we cut to a surprising cliffhanger.”
“We find the same characters but we go deeper, whether in their trajectory or in their past. There are lots of things that are revealed, obviously. We arrive at the conclusion of lots of mysteries.”

Eva Green adds: “I really see these two parts as a great film. In the first part, there is more exposition. In the second part, we know who the characters are.
Maybe we take even more time to explore each character. We develop them more, there may be more density. Things are revealed, notably about the characters of Athos and Milady.“
For François Civil, “Milady has a slightly different tone, even if there is always a counterbalance in the story, a bit like Dumas. There are aspects which are more of a comedy with Pio Marmaï And Romain Duris and things more of a dramatic nature.”
Director Martin Bourboulon adds: “We leave the first film with the King who launches France’s commitment to war to recover the siege of La Rochelle, and the second film explores this. So, if only in visual tone, it is a film which is more aerial, more outdoors, with the sea and natural elements which are a little different.“
Planned from the start as half a diptych and shot at the same time as D’Artagnan, The Three Musketeers: Milady was nevertheless “adjusted” by Martin Bourboulon and his team.
The latter in fact took into account the opinions of D’Artagnan’s spectators, in particular the criticisms concerning the colorimetry sometimes considered too yellow by the public.
We took into account the feedback from spectators.
The director explains to us thus: “We took into account the feedback from spectators. It is a chance. The opportunity to make two films at the same time is unheard of for a director. It’s very rare.
The advantage we had is that when I say that I took the feedback into account, that is to say that in fact, the second opus is much more external. In colorimetry, it offered something different.
In the first part we had a universe with rather dark interiors, and we paid attention to that in the second film. More than spectator feedback, it is feedback linked to the fact that no cinema in France is set up in the same way and there are places where, ultimately, the image that we wanted does not necessarily go the right way.
So there you have it, we have this feedback and we heard it because when we make a film it is above all for the spectators.“
Milady has a sphinx side
This second part will focus more on Milady. We asked Eva Green what drives her character. “Milady is quite a complicated character. She has a rather sphinx-like side.
She can seem quite impassive, quite cold, but it moves from within. What drives Milady is revenge. And she is quite inhabited by a lot of inner torment because of a romantic wound in her past.”
And added: “It’s always interesting to play characters like that who are really driven by something very specific. It has fragilities, cracks. That’s really what attracted me to this character and not just the fact of playing someone fatal. It was quite enjoyable.”
