More green, fewer cars – after protests: New Zinzendorfgasse now open

On Friday morning the time had finally come: the remodeled Zinzendorfgasse in Graz’s university district was officially opened. Despite previous protests from residents because of “stolen” parking spaces, those responsible were very happy.

Everything is new in Graz’s Zinzendorfgasse: since March, the street near the university has been converted into a meeting place. Now it has been officially opened. “More green, more space, more quality of life for residents and visitors,” said Deputy Mayor Judith Schwentner (Greens) outlining the goal of the redesign. Those responsible should now make it clear that all road users should meet at eye level. In any case, politicians were satisfied with the result: “Zinzendorfgasse has been traffic-calmed and now offers space and flair for togetherness. At the same time, with the residents’ parking in the university district, people who live here and are dependent on a car have been given priority when parking,” said Geidorf district manager Hanno Wisiak (KPÖ). In the run-up, there had sometimes been violent protests from residents who complained about the loss of around 50 parking spaces. Even demos against the “parking lot robbery” were organized. Zinzendorfgasse is now the first “green mile” that Schwentner had promised during the election campaign. Around 30 troughs for trees and plants provide the green paint. After an evaluation phase, the trees will then be planted.
