More protection of nature – Burgenland is breaking new ground in fishing

Burgenland is the youngest federal state, but so far had the oldest fishing law in Austria. That’s history now. On Thursday the decision to amend the guidelines will be taken in the state parliament. The new law comes into force on January 1, 2022. A key point is comprehensive environmental and animal protection.

“It was high time to adopt this law and, in keeping with today’s times, to create modern framework conditions,” says Provincial Councilor Leonhard Schneemann. The fishing law dates from 1935, it was announced again in 1946. Attention to waters The amended law is aimed entirely at the protection of native aquatic animals, the sustainable use of waters and the maintenance and creation of a healthy aquatic animal population, as Schneemann emphasizes. For example, minimum catch dimensions, in technical jargon Brittelmaße, and closed seasons will be adjusted to the neighboring federal states. “The exam, for which there will be courses, only has to be taken by those who have not obtained a fishing permit by the end of 2022,” said the State Council. He also announced that there would be no increase in fees. All fish species controlled In future, all 80 species of fish, mussels and crabs native to Burgenland will be listed, including minimum catches and closed seasons. “
