A new law is now intended to ensure that consumers must be informed three months in advance about the discontinuation of the services.

In the course of the energy crisis, numerous German suppliers ran into financial difficulties. Because of the high costs, many customers were terminated with almost immediate effect. The affected households were then supplied by the local basic suppliers – sometimes at exorbitantly high prices.

According to information from “Spiegel”, the federal government now wants to better protect citizens with a new law. In the future, an energy provider must inform the Federal Network Agency and its customers at least three months in advance about the cessation of operations. This should give people enough time to look for a new provider.

If an energy supplier does not comply with this obligation, there is a risk of high fines. The debate was initiated by the Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics, Oliver Krischer from the Greens.

However, the law brings further improvements for consumers. Should you slip into the basic service, higher premiums than existing customers may only be charged for the first three months. After that, the same conditions must apply. In addition, there should also be an upper limit for these three months.
