Do you think that the Nintendo Switch is slowly becoming obsolete? Well, at least in Europe, the handheld console continues to enjoy huge popularity – and even outperformed the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S last year.
Nintendo Switch: More sought after in Europe than next-gen consoles from the competition
On paper, Xbox Series X and PS5 have been available for over a year. In reality, however, the two consoles are still sold out almost continuously today.
But that seems to have played into the hands of the Nintendo Switch last year. According to GSD (Games Service Data), the Nintendo Switch sold better in Europe than the two next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Exact figures are not given, however. However, the publication shows that A total of 7.1 million consoles were sold in Europe in 2021 – 20 percent more than 2020. Sales in the UK and Germany are not included here (source: gamesindustry.biz).
According to the analysis, the Switch managed this feat, though sales fell by 6 percent compared to the previous year. Whether this is simply because the market is slowly becoming saturated for the Nintendo Switch, which is now over 4 years old, is not clear from the descriptions.

Next-Gen Consoles: Only the Xbox Series S is available
While Xbox Series X and PS5 stocks still seem marginal, the cheapest next-gen console is still widely available: the Xbox Series S
The demand for the compact Microsoft console does not seem to be nearly as high as that of the much more powerful consoles and the OLED switch. Nintendo’s new handheld, which was released in October 2021, is also sold out in many places, so potential customers should expect longer waiting times.
