Tens of thousands of apps have not been updated for more than four years on these two app stores.

The application stores of Google and Apple are full of software abandoned by their publishers, a new study reveals.

Many software have not received patches since 2018

The analysis company Pixalate thus indicates that it has found no less than 1.5 million software which has not been updated for at least two years on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store and 2 million apps that haven’t received any fixes or improvements in the last twelve months.

More worryingly still, 314,000 pieces of software have not had the right to an update for more than five years and have been completely abandoned by their publishers.

It is on Android that we find the most applications whose last updates date back more than two years with 870,000 applications concerned, that is to say more than a third of all the software offered by the store of Google.

The App Store meanwhile wins the prize for the number of software left in their juice for more than four years with 290,000 software, or 56% of these outdated applications.

Apple and Google are cleaning up their stores

If some applications do not necessarily need to be updated and enriched regularly, Apple and Google do not like to see software stagnate for years and are beginning to take measures to offer their users products maintained by their developers. .

Google threatens to delist these software from its search engine. In addition, we recently learned that Apple was continuing its spring cleaning and had removed a total of 2.8 million applications from its App Store in six years, many of which were deemed obsolete.

If the major publishers will have no problem maintaining their software and offering regular patches, independent developers working on their software in their free time could no longer find their account with these increasingly restrictive rules.
