Moretti, Serebrennikov, Penn and Audiard in official competition

The 74e Cannes Film Festival will host in July 24 films in official competition, among which those of the Italian directors Nanni Moretti, American Sean Penn, Russian Kirill Serebrennikov and French Jacques Audiard, announced Thursday, June 3 the organizers during a press conference.

They notably join Leos Carax (Annette, opening film), American Wes Anderson (The French Dispatch) or the Dutch Paul Verhoeven (Benedetta), whose names had already been disclosed.

Among the 24 films in the running for the Palme d’Or from July 6 to 17, four are signed by female directors.

Among the films out of competition, In his lifetime, by Emmanuelle Bercot, with Catherine Deneuve, Cécile de France and Benoît Magimel. Filming was interrupted following the hospitalization of Catherine Deneuve. Another highly anticipated film, Stillwater, a thriller by Tom McCarthy shot in Marseille with Matt Damon and Camille Cottin.

Creation of an ephemeral section

Note the creation this year of a new section entitled “Cannes Premieres”. This selection will make way for filmmakers “Confirmed” which have already been selected in competition. We will find there Deception, by Arnaud Desplechin, or even Mothering sunday, by Frenchwoman Eva Husson.

Another novelty this year: the creation of a temporary section devoted to environmental issues. The festival announced in mid-April a series of measures intended to reduce its environmental footprint, as well as a contribution paid by accredited journalists.

The Official Selection will include 61 films. The composition of the jury, chaired by the American Spike Lee, has not yet been revealed. Logistically, the festival’s general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, called for “Prevention” and at the “Caution”, arguing that the Covid-19 epidemic was not yet ” beaten “.
