The Moroccan royal cabinet castigated Monday, March 13 the behavior “irresponsibleof the Justice and Development Party (PJD), an Islamist political formation in the opposition, after the latter accused Moroccan diplomacy of pro-Israeli bias.

The General Secretariat of the PJD recently issued a statement containing irresponsible overstepping and dangerous approximations regarding relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the State of Israel“, denounced the royal cabinet in a press release.

“Criminal Assault”

The PJD, a moderate Islamist conservative party, led by former Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane, had “lamented” in a press release the “recent statements by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in which he seems to defend the Zionist entity (Israel) in certain African and European meetings, at a time when the Israeli occupation continues its criminal aggression against our Palestinian brothersin reference to the violence in the occupied West Bank.

Morocco’s position on the Palestinian issue is irreversible“, replied the royal cabinet, which recalls dryly that “the kingdom’s foreign policy is a prerogative of His Majesty the King (Mohammed VI) under the Constitution“. She “cannot be subject to political one-upmanship and narrow electoral campaigns“, underlines the press release. “The instrumentalization of the kingdom’s foreign policy in an internal partisan agenda thus constitutes a dangerous and unacceptable precedent.“, insists the firm.

A “foreign policy priority”

Morocco and Israel normalized their diplomatic relations in December 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, a process between the Jewish state and several Arab countries, supported by Washington. Since then, rapprochement has continued at a very sustained pace in the military, security, technological, economic and cultural fields.

The Cherifian kingdom nevertheless regularly reaffirms its commitment to the Palestinian question (“one of the priorities of its foreign policy“), under the direction of the king who chairs the Al-Quds committee, responsible for “preserve the Arab-Muslim characterfrom Jerusalem. Rabat favors a two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

If the militant mobilization has weakened, the Palestinian cause continues to arouse immense sympathy among the Moroccan population, as evidenced by the support shown by the players of the national football team and their supporters during the last World Cup in Qatar. .
