Mortal Kombat 1 brings back Li Mei, Tanya, Baraka and reveals its Kombat Pack

NetherRealm Studios takes us today to the Umgadi, an order of warrior priestesses whose mission is to protect the throne of Edenia – that is, here, Princess Mileena and her younger sister Kitana. Tanya, once known for her cruelty and cunning, here plays the card of loyalty to Mileena as leader of the Umgadi. She handles the sansetsukon, an XXL version of a nunchaku, and can also summon pure energy weapons. Li Mei hadn’t been playable since the Wii version of Armageddon in 2007. Umgadi banished from her clan, she now polices the wild lands of Outworld with her ki techniques and spiritual invocations. She is played by Kelly Hu, a Hawaiian actress best known for playing Lady Deathstrike in X-Men 2 or Pearl in The Vampire Diariesor more simply the insectoid D’Vorah in Mortal Kombat 11.

teeth of death

Finally, if Baraka has changed nothing (or almost) in terms of gameplay, his new story reshuffles the cards of Mortal Kombat 1. Because if he once belonged to the race of Tarkatans, cannibal mercenaries of the Outworld, he is now afflicted by the plague of Tarkat, a disease transforming his body and his mind into killing machines. The problem is that Princess Mileena is infected with the same plague. And Baraka is not very happy with the passivity of Liu Kang, god of fire, in the face of the evil that is eating away at him. This will create the necessary narrative tensions for everyone to fuck on the face. Finally, note that this trailer also highlights the kaméo fighter Darrius, whom we had not seen since Armageddon neither. Something to delight his last three fans.

After the game is released, you will be able to complete your roster with the six additional playable characters of the Kombat Pack, loaded with superheroes. Because, as the rumor had it, Omni Man of Invincible and Homelander (“The Protector” in VF) of The Boys will be present. Let me just cut to the looming debates: yes, they’re two Superman archetypes, no, their gameplay won’t (probably) be similar, and yes, Omni Man can turn Homelander around like a sock.

Anything but lucky charms

Still on the superhero side, Peacemaker, the sassy ersatz of Punisher popularized thanks to the interpretation of John Cena in The Suicide Squad And Peacemaker, will complete the triplet. Quan Chi, Ermac and Takeda will provide the series veteran quota. No gameplay has yet been shared for these DLC fighters.

The Kombat Pack will also contain kameo kombatants to vary the pleasures, lining up the heads of Mavado, Khameleon, Ferra, Tremor and Johnny Cage – who will be different from his playable version, already seen in the first gameplay trailer. The icing on the cake, Johnny Cage will also receive a Jean-Claude Van Damme skin in this DLC pack. It’s going to stall from the splits all the time.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on PC, Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch on September 19. Any pre-order on PS5 and Xbox Series will open access to a beta scheduled for August. If you’re a Switch or PC player, or don’t want to give in to the pre-order sirens, you can always get an opinion through the Kelma preview (free access).
