In an interview for Esquire, when asked by a fan “If it was up to you to make the decision, would you include John Wick and Neo (Matrix) in Mortal Kombat?“, Keanu Reeves was quick to respond:”If it was up to me, the answer would be no.“Although these two cinema icons are perfect candidates for new Mortal Kombat characters, the actor nevertheless prefers to separate the two universes:”Mortal Kombat is a great game but I feel like Neo and John Wick have their own universe, and Mortal Kombat has their own.“A separation of universes therefore. Keanu Reeves had however integrated as a character the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, with a futuristic universe closer to that of the heroes embodied by the actor.
It is not insignificant for the Mortal Kombat license to integrate heroes from the cinema and from all universes into the video game. Previously, Alien and Predator, Freddy Krueger (the claws of the night), Rambo or the T-800 (Terminator) had joined the fight.
In 2019, Ed Boon, one of the creators of Mortal Kombat and Injustice, told Game Informer that he wanted to bring Neo into the fighters in Injustice 2, but that had (unfortunately) not been done. For Mortal Kombat XI, the creator’s intention to bring Neo along with John Wick has only grown stronger, although the actor is not of the same opinion. In response to Keanu Reeves’ comments, Ed Boon responded with a rather comical paraphrase “I wouldn’t want to see a Mortal Kombat character appear in a Matrix or John Wick movie. These movies are great but I don’t think they would match.“
However, the choice of the appearance of the characters in the video game does not belong to Reeves but to Warner Bros. which owns Mortal Kombat as well as The Matrix. The two licenses being closely linked, a possible collaboration therefore remains possible.
