Moscow reports submarine attack
Ukraine admits heavy casualties in east

Since last week, the Russian army has intensified its attacks in eastern and southern Ukraine. According to information from London, the troops are making slow progress, suffering heavy losses. But Kyiv also admits losses. Meanwhile, the Kremlin reports the use of a Russian submarine.

Ukraine has conceded heavy casualties from the Russian offensive in the east of the country. However, they are much more difficult on the Russian side, said presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych in Kyiv. “Your losses are colossal.” However, Arestovych did not provide details on the extent of the losses.

The British Ministry of Defense also reported high Russian losses and limited territorial gains in the face of fierce Ukrainian resistance. There is currently particularly heavy fighting around the cities of Lysychansk and Sievjerodonetsk with an attempted Russian advance from Izyum south towards Sloviansk in the Donetsk region, the ministry said in London.

For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the use of a submarine in missile attacks on Ukrainian targets. In the Black Sea, the boat fired at Ukrainian military facilities with Kalibr missiles. The authority released a video that is supposed to show the attack. According to the Interfax news agency, it was the first time that Russia made such an attack public.

More detailed information – about the supposedly hit target – was not given. The submarine is part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The fleet has a total of six submarines of this type, which can be equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles.

Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24. After the Russian military first invaded the neighboring country from the north, south and east, the troops in front of Kyiv later withdrew to intensify the attacks in the east. A Russian commander last week named control of the Donbass and all of southern Ukraine as Moscow’s war goal.
