Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton enters the football business. The seven-time world champion becomes co-owner of the NFL team Denver Broncos. The Broncos were recently taken over by a group of investors led by billionaire Rob Walton, son of Walmart founder Sam Walton.

“We are delighted to welcome seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Sir Lewis Hamilton to our group of owners,” Rob Walton was quoted as saying. A group around the entrepreneur, heir to the Walmart supermarket chain, took over the Broncos in June for a record sum of 4.65 billion dollars. Never before had a club in North America been sold for such a high price.
Hamilton is “a competitive champion who knows what it takes to lead a successful team,” Walton said. In addition, the racer is “a staunch advocate of global equality, including in his own sport. His resilient spirit and outstanding standard will be an asset to the ownership group and the Broncos organization.” Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice joined the ownership group in July.
An investor group led by Hamilton had recently failed when attempting to take over Chelsea FC. In addition to a charitable foundation, the Mercedes driver also has shares in a restaurant chain.
