Elwood Mandart, a 31-year-old man in a wheelchair, set himself on fire around 10 p.m. on May 31. His mother wrote a poignant text on Facebook denouncing the isolation of people with disabilities.
A mother's sadness cannot leave a mark. On Sunday May 31, Elwood Mandart killed himself in Trégueux (Brittany). The man who only moved in a wheelchair, doused himself with hydroalcoholic gel, before setting himself on fire, according to the writings of Ouest France. Alerted by the cries, a neighbor tried, with a T-shirt, to put out the flames on the body of the unfortunate but the latter replied "let me go". Shortly after, Elwood Mandart succumbed to his injuries, at the Yves-Le Foll hospital center in Saint-Brieuc.
Her mother Christine Mandart posted a message on Facebook on June 8, which she entitled "the forgotten of containment " so that this drama does not happen in another family.
For her, confinement was the trigger for this death. The Union of Mums of Handicapped Children (UMEH) has reposted this testimony, so overwhelming, here it is:
"My son Elwood Mandart, 31 years old and handicapped, could not bear the confinement, the isolation, the short time and listening to certain carers, (others, knew how to find the time), the prohibition for me to visit my son …
(…)
Elwood decided to stop living on June 1, 2020, by setting himself on fire, begging the person who tried to rescue him:
– Let me go, I want to go, I feel sick to my heart …
Several times, he alerted those accompanying them.
the curator (because I lived 450 km from him), the psychologist and voila!
In my opinion, there is a huge flaw on the part of the professionals …
Not a line, in the newspapers, who is interested in a disabled person who disappears?
But I'm not just going to empty her apartment of her belongings, close her door one last time.
I will raise awareness.
I don't want it to start again!
I love you my son."
Christine Mandart, from Ouest France, would like society to be more attentive to people with disabilities, isolated, who cannot find work.
