Mother of 4 children, she leaves the restaurant without paying… 10 years later, the boss receives a shock letter

Is it ever too late to pay off your debts? On Sunday July 26, 2020, Guney Cokkaya, the manager of the kebab restaurant The Bosphoruslocated in Mulhouse, in the Haut-Rhin, had a funny surprise, discovering an anonymous handwritten letter, accompanied by a 50 euro note. To understand, you have to go back to 2010. That year, a mother had lunch with her four children in the establishment before leaving the restaurant without paying.

At the time, Guney Cokkaya was only 13 and not yet the manager of Bosphorus. His father, originally from Turkey and arrived in Mulhouse in 1992, acquired it in 2000. Unfortunately, he did not remember a mother who left without paying in 2010. “It is therefore not known if this mother had “run away” with her children without saying anything or if she had explained that she could not afford to pay”, explained Guney Cokkaya in the columns of the newspaper Alsace. However, he is convinced that if this woman had confided in her difficult situation, his father and his team would have offered him the meal. According to him, if she ran away with her children, “they must not have run after him!”

A letter that surprised this restaurateur

The day he received this mysterious letter, Guney Cokkaya did not have time to dwell on it at first. “Since there were a lot of customers, I didn’t have time to read this letter right away. I thought maybe it was someone who wanted to provide meals for others”, he explained to the newspaper. But, to his great surprise, when he opened the envelope, he then discovers a handwritten letter.

“Hello Mr. Boss of the Bosphorus. I give you this letter with 50 € to return your money. In 2010, I had eaten with my four children. I had just come out of a divorce, the situation was desperate and I left without paying. I recently remembered this story. I hope you will forgive me for this. May Allah grant you success in your life […] Excuse me, I sincerely regret”, can we read. This note was therefore also accompanied by a 50 euro note to reimburse the meal eaten 10 years earlier.

“Don’t judge people too quickly!”

Touched by this letter, the young restaurateur did not intend to publicize this moving story. But, one of his friends, at the origin of the Mulhouse collective of solidarity For laterasked him if he could share the letter on social networks. An initiative that had the goal of “educate people to wear their hearts on their sleeves”. Guney Cokkaya was therefore convinced. Quickly, the story had been widely shared on Facebook and other social networks. “I can’t believe how big it got”was surprised Guney Cokkaya.

In the post in question, the friend of the manager of the Bosphorus wrote that “each of us has his own stories, his own troubles and moments of joy”. “There is this kind of choice, of decision that life imposes… difficult to accept or to live with time. When, overwhelmed by the weight of life’s troubles, we come to act and sometimes with regret”, he had continued. He then indicated that the approach of sending this letter, even 10 years later, was “wonderfully noble”before pointing out that “the Bosphorus had already forgiven”.
