Motive still unknown – wrong-way driver delivers cinematic scenes in Carinthia

Starting with the report that a wrong-way driver was on the road on the B317 Friesacher Bundesstraße, cinematic scenes took place on the streets of Carinthia on Saturday morning…

The first report about a wrong-way driver reached the state control center at 8.40 a.m., whereupon two patrols from the Althofen police inspection started an immediate search – unsuccessfully. Around 9 a.m., the driver was observed on the A2, heading towards Vienna. Despite an immediate search by two highway police patrols and a patrol from the rapid intervention group, the driver of the car managed to escape here too. Apparently, the man is said not only to have been driving on the opposite lane, but also too fast. It was only when the car he was looking for was on the expressway towards St. Veit twenty minutes later that he was able to get through a roadblock with several patrol cars – even a police helicopter was in action – be stopped on the S37 in the area of the St. Georgen am Längsee exit. According to initial information, the man is said to have been asked to leave his car at gunpoint. A breathalyser test was negative – it is not yet clear why the man became a wrong-way driver and street hooligan. Fortunately, the incident ended lightly, as nobody was injured and no property damage was caused.
