Timeless and pleasant design
The Motorola Edge 30 Pro makes a positive impression as soon as it is taken out of the box: the smartphone feels surprisingly good in the hand and leaves a pleasant impression. This is mainly due to the matte plastic back, which has a color effect. Depending on the incidence of light, the device appears in a different color. Apart from that, the smartphone is kept simple and fits seamlessly into the series of predecessors and other models. A suitable charging cable with mains plug is included in the packaging – according to Motorola, it does not intend to remove this addition. The usual pamphlet with all the legal information and a quick start guide is in the enclosed sleeve. The Motorola Edge 30 Pro lacks a jack socket – an adapter is required for wired headphones. The smartphone is also not waterproof. The fingerprint scanner in the power button reacts quickly and unlocks the device reliably. You can use Motorola Ready for with the Motorola Edge 30 Pro either via a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or via the WLAN connection.
What can the Edge 30 Pro camera do?
The camera block on the back of the Motorola Edge 30 Pro catches the eye, but it doesn’t protrude far from the case. The smartphone still wobbles when it is lying on the table. But that is secondary for photo enthusiasts – the equipment and performance of the camera is more important. The main camera is equipped with 50 megapixels (MP) and the ultra wide-angle lens also comes with 50 MP. Both work with quad-pixel technology and thus have a final resolution of 12 MP. Below that, Motorola places a depth sensor (2 MP).
The pictures taken with the main camera are well illuminated in daylight. However, a strong sharpness effect immediately catches the eye, which gives the picture an unnatural expression. Unfortunately, this continues with increasing magnification: at 10x zoom, the images look more like an oil painting from the past than a smartphone photo. Compared to its predecessor, Motorola saves on the zoom level: While the Edge 20 Pro was still able to enlarge up to 50x, the Edge 30 Pro only manages a tenx zoom and is already struggling with it. The ultra wide-angle shot and the images with the macro camera give a better result.
The front camera is embedded in a hole in the center of the display. The 60 MP have a resolution of 15 MP due to the quad-pixel technology. The image is sharp in the foreground – but that’s it. Details are missing in the background even without portrait mode. The picture looks blurry.
Motorola Edge 30 Pro: Powerful performance
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with 12 gigabytes (GB) of working memory (RAM) works inside the Motorola Edge 30 Pro. The smartphone achieves very good results in the benchmarks. In everyday life, the Edge 30 Pro also convinces with quick operation. Even current mobile games like “Genshin Impact” run without stuttering on very high graphics settings. The internal memory is 256 GB – expansion using a memory card is not possible. There are two places for SIM cards in the built-in slot.
Battery recharged quickly?
The battery of the Motorola Edge 30 Pro has a capacity of 4,800 mAh. The smartphone should easily get through the day, at least with moderate use. If the battery runs out, recharge it with a quick charge of 68 watts or inductively with up to 15 watts. It is also possible to charge other devices via power sharing.
Motorola Edge 30 Pro: price, colors, availability
The Motorola Edge 30 Pro will appear on the German market on February 24, 2022. The recommended retail price at the start of sales is 799.99 euros – making it 100 euros more expensive than the predecessor at the market launch. The smartphone is only available in the tested color Cosmos Blue (dark blue) on the shelves of various dealers – Motorola also sells it online in Stardust White (white). From March 2022, the company will offer a pen and a case for the smartphone with the stylus and the folio. A sale in a bundle is not planned.
Motorola Edge 30 Pro: conclusion of the practical test
The Motorola Edge 30 Pro made a good impression in the practical test. The display is bright, the performance is good and the camera takes solid pictures. Nevertheless, the smartphone is not a better successor to the Edge 20 Pro per se. This is due to the weaker camera equipment, for example. In other respects, such as the display, the smartphone is only on par with the predecessor. But there are also improvements: The battery grows and can be charged faster, the performance is better. However, the Motorola Edge 30 Pro is denied the effortless jump over the high bar of the Edge 20 Pro.
