After the April 2024 launch of the Edge 50, Motorola is returning to the foldable device market with the Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra. If the two smartphones are a continuation of their predecessors, we will however note welcome improvements, particularly in terms of the SoC, the Photo part and the external screen. Presentations.
Clearly, Motorola has been at the forefront of the media scene in recent days. For good reason, the American manufacturer made headlines by making a historic decision concerning the Moto S50 Neo, a smartphone currently dedicated to the Chinese market. On the occasion of its launch, the brand announced an extension of the warranty period, now 4 years. A first in the industry that could inspire other competitors.
And on this Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the manufacturer stands out again by lifting the veil on its future foldable smartphones: the Motorola Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra. If the two devices are logically a continuation of their predecessors, namely the Razr 40 and 40 Ultra, they stand out with some appreciable improvements on the side of the SoC and the external screen in particular. Let’s take stock together.
Razr 50: an even better formula, still under €900
With the Razr 40, Motorola caused a sensation by offering the very first folding smartphone on the market under €1,000if not more. For good reason, the device was displayed at the particularly aggressive price of €899 in its unique configuration with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage space.
Good news with the Razr 50, the American brand has chosen to keep the same price list. So, the latest addition will also sell for €899always in a single configuration 8/256 GB.
Concretely, the technical sheet of the Razr 50 is quite close to that of its predecessor. With this new generation, the manufacturer has simply improved its formula on a few very specific aspects. Thus, the internal panel remains almost unchanged: we still benefit from a 6.9-inch 120Hz LTPO AMOLED display in Full HD+ definition and HDR 10+ compatible. The difference lies in the maximum brightness of the panel, which goes from 1,400 nits on the Razr 40 to 3,000 nits on the Razr 50.
On the other hand, the changes are more significant on the external screen. The OLED panel is gaining in size to now reach the 3.6 inches (compared to 1.5 on the Razr 40). The refresh rate also increases to 90Hz against 60 Hz, just like the image definition, now of 1056 x 1066 px.
Among the other new features, we will note the integration of a Dimensity 7300X SoC from Mediatek instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, or even IPX8 certification for the hull. Without further ado, here is the technical sheet in full:

Razr 50 Ultra: improved screen and photo set on the program
The Razr 50 Ultra stands out as a timid evolution of the Razr 40 Ultra. Be careful, this is not a bad thing in itself, as much the experience offered by the 40 Ultra was qualitative as you can see in our full test.
Here again, Motorola has set about refine its formula, especially on the screen part. Just like on the Razr 40, the secondary slab has gained in size to go from 3.6″ to 4″ on this model. The definition increases slightly by extension (1272 x 1080 px), as does the refresh rate: 165Hz against 144 Hz. No major changes to report on the main screen, except the exception of a maximum brightness gain (3,000 nits versus 1,400 nits).
The Photo part is experiencing a nice move upmarket. For good reason, we go from a 12 MP + 13 MP duo to a set made up of a 50 MP main sensor (OIS, wide angle) and a 50 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and OIS. Concerning the release date, we will have to be satisfied with a window for the moment, set for early July 2024 according to the brand.
