Motorola will soon launch a new smartphone accessory. Thanks to this device, users will be able to take advantage of a feature until now exclusive to the iPhone 14 and the latest Huawei smartphones: satellite communication.

Since Apple was the first to offer satellite communication with the iPhone 14, many manufacturers in turn want to integrate this technology on their devices. We know in particular that Google could offer satellite connectivity on the Pixel 8, a first on Android. Recently, we also learned that satellite emergency SMS will soon be a reality on Google Messages.

The Huawei Mate 50 and 50 Pro (just like the Mate 60) also offer this feature via Beidou Satellite Message. Thanks to it, users can only send text messages and certain information such as their location in the absence of a telephone network.

However, as our colleagues from the Gizmochina site report, Motorola will soon join this closed circle. Indeed, the manufacturer intends to launch a new modular accessory in the near future. Thanks to him, any smartphone could, in theory at least, be able to take advantage of satellite communications.

Motorola will also launch into satellite communications

But beware, where Motorola goes further is that this device will offer the ability to make two-way calls, in addition to sending SMS. In other words, users will be able to receive and send telephone calls via satellites, which is not yet possible on the iPhone 14 for example.

According to information shared by the media, this module will directly connect to Chinese Tiantong-1 satellite network, the same one used by the Huawei Mate 50 and Mate 60. For now, many unknowns persist on this device. We do not yet know its price, its date of availability or the list of compatible smartphones (Motorola only or not). Furthermore, we do not yet know whether Motorola plans to launch the module in other markets except China.

As a reminder, Motorola already offers an accessory that allows you to taste the joys of satellite connectivity: Defy Satellite Link. Available in Europe from mid-July 2023 at a price of 179 €this compact device connects via Bluetooth to any Android smartphone (running Android 10 or more recent version) and iPhone (running iOS 14 or more recent) and offers satellite connection via the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app and paid subscription.
