This is what a weekend trip to Lake Wolfgang offers

Summer is slowly approaching and many are drawn to nature. There is a unique landscape at the Austrian Wolfgangsee.
A pearl of Austria lies around two hours by car from Munich. In the Salzkammergut region there are several lakes that not only attract holidaymakers in midsummer. One of them is the Wolfgangsee. Thanks to its crystal-clear water, the surrounding mountains and the wide range of leisure activities, the body of water is an ideal destination for a weekend trip.

Most of the Alpenrandsee is in the province of Salzburg, with only a small section in Upper Austria. With an area of 13 square kilometers, it is one of the largest lakes in the region. There are a few smaller towns on the shore, such as the communities of Strobl and Sankt Wolfgang. With their alleys, beautiful houses and small shops, the villages are popular destinations for holidaymakers.
If you want to take a walk along the water, you can take the Bürglstein tour from Strobl to St. Wolfgang. The path is very flat, but offers a great view over the lake – the distance is covered in about an hour.
A lap around the lake
Once around the lake leads a bike path, which is very well developed and signposted. A mountain bike is not necessary for this. There are also a few bike rental companies in the towns along the lake, which is why you can definitely leave your own bike at home.
Starting from St. Wolfgang it goes to Ried, from there a ferry takes the bikes and driver to the Gasthof Fürberg. Unfortunately, it is not possible to cross the Falkenstein by bike. From the boat, however, guests have a magnificent view of the steep rock face, which is very popular with climbers and cliff divers. From Fürberg it goes via Winkel and St. Gilgen to Strobl – from there the circular route leads back to St. Wolfgang. Around two hours, including the boat trip, should be planned for this. Important: check the ferry timetable. Because the ship leaves only irregularly.
Fantastic panorama
Hikers can also experience a lot in this region. The most famous mountains include the Schafberg, the Zwölferhorn and the Sparber. The steepest cog railway in Austria runs on the former, and passengers reach the summit in around 35 minutes. But of course there are also some hiking trails, with and without climbing areas, leading to the top of the Schafberg. The tours, which last more than three hours, are worth it, on a clear day you can see up to seven lakes – including the Mondsee, the Attersee and the Wolfgangsee.
The many lakes also characterize the region. Only a stone’s throw away from Lake Wolfgang are the Mondsee and Attersee, the small Fuschlsee, Wallersee, Irrsee and Traunsee. In summer, vacationers can jump into a different body of water every day. There are several accommodation options: in addition to hotels and guesthouses, many campsites have access to the lake – including a jetty. If you are willing to pay a small extra fee, you can park the mobile home right on the shore. Of course, campers with their tents are also welcome.
