The news of the death of Alan Arkins (1934-2023) shook the film world. The longtime actor and Oscar winner has passed away at the age of 89, along with his sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony have confirmed to the US magazine “People”. Hollywood star Anne Hathaway (40) remembers a colleague who meant a lot to the actress’ career.

Hathaway and Arkin Filmed “Get Smart” Together

“Alan Arkin was a gem of a person and I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with him on ‘Get Smart’,” Hathaway writes on Instagram for several pictures of the deceased, on which she can sometimes be seen at his side. In the action comedy released in 2008 by director Peter Segal (61), the two played alongside Steve Carell (60), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (51) and Bill Murray (72).

“He was kind, soulful, supportive, a professional from a professional, generous, authentic, wise, curious and a fantastic example of an artist,” Hathaway continues. On the set, he left a lasting impression on the then 23-year-old actress. Arkin is at the center of some of the moments in her career that she cherishes the most and remembers fondly.

Arkin was an idol and a friend

For Carell, Arkin was “my idol, my friend and I loved him”, he tells “People” and remembers the first meeting of the two. “When I first met Alan, he gave me a business card,” explains Carell. It said: “Alan Arkin: Actor, director, musician. Can drive cars with gears. Owns his own tuxedo.”

Many other colleagues also condoled or remembered Arkin in the past few hours. Michael Douglas (78) writes on Instagram, for example: “Today we have lost a wonderful performer whose intelligence, flair for comedy and consummate professionalism have left an indelible mark on our industry over the past 70 years.”
