Long-missing actor Julian Sands is dead. Melanie Lynskey remembers a lovely colleague.

Sad certainty has prevailed in the Julian Sands case (1958-2023) since Tuesday. The British actor, known from “A Room with a View”, “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Ocean’s 13”, among other things, set off on a hike on the so-called Mt. Baldy in California at the beginning of the year and did not return. Coroners on June 27 identified a body found recently as Sands’. Melanie Lynskey (46) not only remembers a fellow actor, but a good friend.

The two starred together for the miniseries “Stephen King’s House of Damnation” more than two decades ago. The New Zealander first met Sands on the set of the series in 2000, as she writes about a common picture on Instagram. She had seen “Room with a View” dozens of times before “and I adored you in it,” she explains directly to the deceased.

Lynskey, who is also known to series fans from “The Last of Us”, “Candy” and “Yellowjackets”, among other things, was “so nervous at the time that I could hardly speak to you”. When she finally worked up the courage to tell him how important the film and him in his role were to her, she was “surprised by your modesty, the lack of ego, the lack of self-expression”.

Lynskey and Sands quickly became friends

The two quickly became friends and he often gave them gifts – mostly with “intimidating non-fiction and classical music CDs”. Sands found out at the time that she had never been to an opera, picked her up one night and later laughed when she yawned during the performance. In return, she gave him, among other things, the complete “2001” album by Dr. Dre (58) played and got him to call her boyfriend in New Zealand.

“You were gracious and patient and you had a lot of fun,” Lynskey concludes her contribution. “We lost touch, but I have never forgotten your kindness and I will never forget you.” Her heart is with the Sands family and friends.

Actress Selma Blair (51) could only agree and wrote in a comment: “A beautiful tribute, a remarkable man.” Colleague Sarah Desjardins (28) explained: “It made me cry, what special memories.”
