Indie rock icon Steve Albini is dead. The influential music producer died at the age of just 61 as a result of a heart attack.

The influential music producer and musician Steve Albini (1962-2024) is dead. The man who was particularly known for producing the final Nirvana album “In Utero” died of a heart attack on May 7th, according to employees of his recording studio Electrical Audio confirmed to the music magazine “Pitchfork”. He was 61 years old.

Since the beginning of the 1980s, Albini has worked as a musician in various bands such as Big Black and Shellac. However, he became better known for his work as a producer. Among other things, he was responsible for the iconic album “Surfer Rosa” by the Pixies and “Pod” by The Breeders.

This also brought Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) to the attention of the sound engineer. He asked him to produce the band’s third studio album “In Utero”. The recordings were completed in just six days. Unforgettable hits like “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” emerged from it. Albini himself estimated that he had produced several thousand albums in his long career. In addition to those mentioned, he also worked with PJ Harvey (54), Jimmy Page (80) and Robert Plant (75), the Stooges, the Manic Street Preachers, and Jarvis Cocker (60).
