The wedding is naturally a very special day in life – for Grace Gwaltney it was even more special than it already was. The woman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had just tied the knot with her husband and had wedding photographer Rachel Rowland photograph her with her bridesmaids. A surprise guest suddenly appeared: Tom Hanks.

The actor was apparently in the area with his wife Rita Wilson and decided to reach out to the group of women. “Hey, I’m Tom Hanks, I’d like a photo with you,” he said, Grace Gwaltney recalls. And that’s what the Hollywood star got – Rowland posted the results on her Instagram page. It also shows how relaxed the mood was.

At first Gwaltney was so surprised that she could hardly move. “I was immediately paralyzed, just looking around and not knowing what to do,” she said. Her photographer and bridesmaids were far more enthusiastic: “We all started screaming and were in total shock,” Rachel Rowland told Newsweek.

Hanks and his wife were in Pittsburgh while the actor was filming his new movie, A Man Called Otto. “Tom was just wonderful and charming, just as you would expect. He and his wife wished Luke and Grace well in their marriage and then left,” Rowland said. As quickly as Hanks and Wilson came, they were gone again.

Tom Hanks is known for being close to his fans and that’s one of the reasons why he’s so popular. He is particularly interested in weddings: the Hollywood star has spontaneously surprised couples at their photo shoots several times. Most recently, in October last year, he asked a couple from California if he could take a picture with them after watching their wedding ceremony on the beach from afar.
