Any Oscar-nominated film benefits from unparalleled exposure, which also leads to a sharp increase in… illegal downloads.

While the 95th Oscars ceremony is looming (it will take place on March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles), the cream of American and world cinema is preparing to dress up in the hope of winning a small statuette or at least being a privileged witness to this evening, hosted by the famous presenter Jimmy Kimmel. Each year, the ceremony interests, from near or far, hundreds of millions of people, who give a very special resonance to the actresses, actors and films nominated. This mass effect benefits the 7e art, but also to piracy.

The piracy boom for Oscar-nominated films

An Oscar nomination logically leads to a boom in piracy. The public, the media and above all the social networks increase the enthusiasm and the interest of the curious who might be tempted to watch some of the nominated films, potentially rewarded or which could escape the coronation, by means of a roundabout way.

As long as a feature film generates positive attention, it sees its distribution in pirate copy explode. And the Oscars are a godsend for all nominated films.

The Iknow platform was able to see that on the day of the nominations itself (January 24, 2023), pirate downloads exploded for almost all of the nominated films. Appointments week, hacking Tarof Todd Field, jumped 89%, while The Fabelmansdirected by Steven Spielberg, saw his illegal downloads curve climb by 58%, to name but a few.

Price discounts generate more illicit downloads

Paradoxically, the two films to have benefited less or not at all from the post-nomination rebound are Top Gun: Maverick (+15% only) and Avatar: The Waterway (-9%). They’re the two blockbusters on the list, and they’ve no doubt already gotten all the exposure they need in recent months, as the films have been big box office hits.

The peak in torrent file downloads was reached on nomination day itself, January 24, with an effect that lasted nearly a week before returning to a normal level.

Some other films also peaked between January 10 and 15, 2023. On January 10, the Golden Globes ceremony took place, also very followed and relayed around the world. Proof that planetary aura prize discounts are always very beneficial for pirates.
