A new generation ofPC power supplies points the tip of its nose in order to better manage the requirements of the next generation of graphics cards signed AMD/NVIDIA.
In a few weeks, at worst a few months, AMD like NVIDIA will therefore distribute the Radeon RX 7000 and GeForce RTX 4000. PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR cable and its 600 Watts.
ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0
MSI is therefore the first to present a power supply able to suit this new generation of graphics cards. As its name suggests, the MEG Ai1300P is a 1300 Watt power supply.
Unsurprisingly, it’s certified 80 Plus Platinum and proudly displays two other logos – ATX 3.0 Ready as well as PCIe 5.0 Ready – to emphasize how modern it is.
Fully modular, it will of course offer all the cables we know today, but as you can see below, a 12+4 pin connector is also present.
This is therefore intended for the PCIe 5.0 cable with its special connector that MSI has also decided to show on its photo. It will be linked to the latest graphics cards.
2,600 Watts for 100 µs
The objective is to supply said card, but also and above all to meet its needs in all circumstances and in particular at the time of what are called power excursions or, in French, load peaks.
Very limited in time, these peaks can cause a noticeable peak in consumption at the level of the graphics card and if the block is not strong enough, crash the system.
The PCI-SIG has determined that graphics cards can triple their consumption during these peaks and this is all the more true for very high-end cards such as the RTX 3090 Ti for example.
In fact, MSI points out that its MEG Ai1300P is capable of holding twice its maximum power – 2,600 Watts therefore – for 100 µs. As you can see, we’re safe: even a 600 Watt GPU is covered.
In its press release, MSI does not mention any launch date or price, but it is a safe bet that the latter will be particularly high.
