With rather unusual award categories such as “Best Kiss” or “Best Fight”, the MTV Movie & TV Awards have enjoyed great popularity since 1992. But this year the traditional award show is canceled, according to a spokesman for MTV confirmed to Billboard. An official reason for the cancellation is not given. However, the awards ceremony will “return in 2025 with a redesigned format,” as MTV explained.

Are the MTV Movie & TV Awards in crisis?

As a result of the cancellation, US media speculated about the reasons. Last year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, for example, caused a lot of bad press. Because of the strike by US screenwriters, presenter Drew Barrymore, 49, canceled just five days before the show was supposed to take place.

Since many of the planned guests also expressed solidarity with the strikers, MTV ultimately broadcast a pre-recorded ceremony without a presenter. At the time, the show was criticized on social media as, among other things, the “Worst Awards Show of All Time”, as the British “Sun” reported.

This is not the first time that US channel MTV has canceled an award show, the MTV Movie & TV Awards. The MTV Europe Music Awards, which were supposed to take place in Paris in 2023, were canceled in October due to the Gaza war. This was the first cancellation in the three-decade history of the EMAs.
