What is the best film with Adam Driver according to AlloCiné internet users? On the occasion of the release of “Megalopolis” by Francis Ford Coppola, here is the feature film of his filmography as an actor that you voted for with your ratings!
It’s Adam Driver’s big return to cinema with Megalopolis, the long-awaited new film by Francis Ford Coppola, which took him more than forty years to put together. The former American soldier who became one of the most popular and talented actors in Hollywood is the headliner of this sci-fi epic with other stars.
What is Megalopolis about?
Megalopolis is a Roman epic set in an imaginary modern America in full decadence. The city of New Rome absolutely must change, which creates a major conflict between Caesar Catilina, a genius artist with the power to stop time, and the arch-conservative mayor Franklyn Cicero.
The first dreams of an ideal utopian future while the second remains very attached to a regressive status quo protective of greed, privilege and private militias. The mayor’s daughter and jet-setter Julia Cicero, in love with César Catilina, is torn between the two men and will have to discover what seems best for the future of humanity.
Adam Driver co-stars in Megalopolis with Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal and Shia LaBeouf, among others.
And Adam Driver’s best film is…
Adam Driver was revealed thanks to the series Girls and the film Frances Ha by Noah Baumbach with Greta Gerwig, and he has come a long way since working with the biggest filmmakers, whether in independent films or in blockbusters and franchises like the Star Wars saga.
With 46 films and series already filmed and a 15-year career under his belt, Adam Driver has established himself as one of the leading faces of Hollywood and one of the best actors of his generation. But then what is the work that was most acclaimed by the AlloCiné community?
Adam Driver has a lot of highly rated films at 4 out of 5 stars, like Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, for which he received numerous nominations.
But the feature film in which Adam Driver appears which receives the best rating from AlloCiné spectators is none other than The Last Duel by Ridley Scott, released in 2021, which stands out with 4.1 stars out of 5.
Inspired by the book The Last Duel: Paris, December 29, 1386 by Eric Jager, the film reveals old hypotheses about the last known legal duel in France – also called “Judgment of God” – between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends who over time became bitter rivals.
This duel is launched following the denunciation by Marguerite, Carrouges’ wife, of the sexual assault she suffered by Le Gris, at the risk of her life. The trial of combat that follows – a grueling duel to the death between Carrouges and Le Gris – places the destiny of each of them in the hands of God.
A box office failure that was given a second life
Unfortunately, The Last Duel was a box office failure as it was produced for around $100 million and only grossed $30 million. But the film was given a second commercial life thanks to its distribution on the video-on-demand market and to a second audience who were able to (re)discover the feature film, and praise it.
If we look at the reviews from AlloCiné spectators, the vast majority of community members loved The Last Duel. According to Alice025 (4.5/5), the film is a “historical drama of a great power”.
For her part, marilyne_fgeek (5/5) goes further and believes that “Last Duel is much more than a masterpiece, it is a true cinematographic experience, a journey to the Middle Ages, no false note”.
Even if the internet user Mr cinetok (5/5) gave The Last Duel five stars, he would give “good ten” because the film is made according to him “part of one of the most beautiful films of [Ridley Scott] among his already cult masterpieces (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator etc)”. He believes that “this story in the (real) Middle Ages, from image to sound, is great, very great art”.
Finally, ConFucAmuS (4/5) highlights the high quality of the screenplay of Ridley Scott’s film, which tells the story through 3 points of view:
“The screenplay written by three (Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Nicole Holofcener) may well opt for a Rashōmon-style structure (the same event told from three perspectives), the final result broadens the framework to move from news item to terrifying social observation . […]
The Last Duel is probably the film that has best succeeded in identifying all the components of a problem whose consequences we are beginning to measure today. So I take my hat off to the entire team because it took audacity to transform the exercise into a mirror of our times.”
The film “Megalopolis” by Francis Ford Coppola is currently in theaters.
