Grand Theft Auto 6’s graphics might be less impressive than expected. That’s not us saying that, but a former developer who worked at Rockstar for nearly fifteen years.

Are we getting a little too excited about Grand Theft Auto 6? That’s what Obbe Vermeij, a former developer who worked for nearly fifteen years as a technical director at Rockstar, from 1995 to 2009, suggests in a recent interview with the YouTube channel SanInPlay, The man (who oversaw the graphical workings of GTA 3 and GTA 4) claims that the sixth installment of Grand Theft Auto will not be “very different” from GTA 5. “I think maybe people will be a little disappointed,” he says.

An opinion to be taken seriously?

Just to dispel any doubt: Obbe Vermeij says it himself, he does not have information from “the inside”, directly at Rockstar, and gives his opinion here as an observer, with a lot of GTA baggage for him. Thus, based on the first – and so far only – trailer for GTA 6, the former developer notes that the studio seems to have “pushed things even further” on this sixth episode and says he is particularly impressed by the scene on the beach where each NPC does what they please with animations screaming realism.

Yet, even though he acknowledges that his former colleagues are capable of moving mountains, He thinks that “some people’s expectations are probably too high”. For Obbe Vermeij, we will probably never see a slap in the face worthy of the transition from GTA 2 to GTA 3 (from a top-down view to a shoulder camera in a fully 3D world) or from GTA 3 to GTA 4 (when HD was introduced) in the series again. “It’s complicated because technology progresses more slowly today,” believes the former technical director.

“Unprecedented entertainment”

A final sentence that can easily be contested, but Obbe Vermeij is right on one point: we are not going to see “technological gaps” like the arrival of 3D or high definition again any time soon! But, with Rockstar, you have to expect anything… Six years after its release, Red Dead Redemption 2 still amazes us with its slew of sickly details and its absolutely splendid panoramas (especially for a title designed for the PS4 and Xbox One). We remind you: GTA 6 will be released on PS5 and Xbox Series – the PC version has still not been mentioned – in the fall of 2025. The CEO of Take-Two (Rockstar’s parent company), Strauss Zelnick, promises us “unprecedented entertainment”. We hope to take him at his word.
