On Tuesday, October 29, M6 will premiere the first two episodes of Murder Club, a new comedic police drama featuring Tiphaine Daviot and Éric Cantona.

The series follows the story of Amélia Delcourt, a daring young police officer who has just joined the crime squad. A passionate true-crime enthusiast, Amélia makes a critical error during a mission aimed at capturing Shakespeare, a notorious serial killer causing chaos in northern France. After this misstep, she is sidelined and becomes determined to regain her colleagues’ trust while stopping the killer from committing further atrocities.

When the case of a missing 15-year-old girl is quickly dismissed as a runaway, Amélia decides to trust her instincts and begins her own secret investigation. However, she soon realizes that she is not alone in her pursuit of the truth. Daniel Hansen, a previously respected criminology expert now shunned by his colleagues, is also on the case, seeking redemption in his own way.

Despite their initial reluctance to work together, Amélia and Daniel must join forces to locate the missing girl before she falls prey to Shakespeare, whose past seems curiously intertwined with Daniel’s own…

Tiphaine Daviot, familiar to audiences from her role in En Famille, portrays Amélia Delcourt, delivering a performance that earned her the Best Actress award at the Séries Mania 2024 Festival. Alongside her, Éric Cantona takes on the role of Daniel Hansen, a gloomy former profiler. Together, they create a duo that is both humorous and heartfelt.

During their encounter last September at the Festival de la fiction in La Rochelle, Daviot and Cantona discussed their exciting new project, which is sure to resonate with crime comedy enthusiasts.

What drew you to this project?

Tiphaine Daviot: I was captivated by the tone. I enjoy this blend of genres, and I feel that in France, we can be quite reserved about it. I prefer roles that reflect life’s dualities—at times dark, at times humorous. For me, these elements enhance the emotional experience. I also loved the dynamic between the characters; it’s always intriguing when two initially opposing personalities end up liking each other.

Éric Cantona: I share that sentiment!

In recent years, detective series have been everywhere. What makes serial killers so captivating to audiences?

Tiphaine Daviot: I think we all have a curious side. Personally, I adore thrillers. Fiction offers a level of protection; even if it touches upon unsettling real-world cases, we can maintain a distance since it’s not directly happening to us or our loved ones. Ultimately, it can be a cathartic experience.

Is Shakespeare’s story based on real events?

Tiphaine Daviot: Not at all. The creators have quite the imagination! (laughs)

Éric Cantona: Yes, they are seasoned writers in this genre and draw inspiration from various sources.

The series includes playful elements of the Gothic genre, especially in an episode about murderabilia. What was it like to shoot that scene?

Éric Cantona: It was an absolute blast; we had so much fun.

Tiphaine Daviot: The costumes were stunning, and we filmed in a remarkable old cinema in Brussels. The sets added a unique flair to each episode, creating a visually striking experience.

How was your collaboration on set?

Tiphaine Daviot: Amazing! The dynamic was seamless and felt very natural; we really enjoyed our time together.

Éric Cantona: It’s true that we shared countless laughs on set.

Any memorable moments from shooting?

Tiphaine Daviot: In the last episode, I had to hit Éric playfully with a folder, which was quite enjoyable!

Éric Cantona: It was an unforgettable shoot, filled with laughter.

Were you surprised by the identity of the murderer?

Éric Cantona: Completely! I didn’t see it coming.
