In 2009, Luc Rabain called the gendarmes to report the disappearance of his wife. Three years later, his body was found. The man will then be arrested by the investigators, thanks to a subtle detail found by a gendarme.
This is a case that necessarily echoes the Daval affair. In 2009, Luc Rabain, counter agent, warns the gendarmes that his wife, Josiane Desteuque, has disappeared. The investigation is launched and the phone of the disappeared is found in a path near her house. Months pass and still no news from this woman. But on January 17, 2017, a cyclist made a macabre discovery: a human skull, hidden under a pile of leaves. The investigators also find a sleeping bag, containing a dismembered skeleton which will indeed be identified as that of Josiane Desteuque. For her husband, Luc Rabain, the pain is displayed on his face. For three years, he will then lead a normal life.
But that was without counting on the eye of a gendarme from the Rouen Research Section. In 2012, he took over the file and he was intrigued by a photo of the couple’s house. In this shot, we can see the daughter of Josiane Desteuque in a similar sleeping bag to the one in which the woman’s body was found. Then the gendarme takes a closer look at the past of the deceased. On November 21, 2012, the gendarmes took Luc Rabain into custody. If at the beginning he chants to be innocent, the man cracks. He admits that on August 16, 2009, he strangled his wife following an argument and took the body into the forest. “I admit that I took his life, but I don’t know how.”
“There was a part of me that had acted and another that was hiding the truth”
According to him, he would have killed his wife to “keep her quiet, “so that she stops insulting me”. “I deceived myself, he defends himself, I never wanted to kill her, so I didn’t feel like I had committed a crime… There was a part of me that had acted and another that was hiding the truth”. During his trial, Luc Rabain will be sentenced to fifteen years’ imprisonment.
