Transport Minister Wissing is responsible for his own digital department in order to speed up digitization. According to a strategy paper from the Chancellery, the FDP politician now has to share his budget with other cabinet members.
According to a report, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport will have to coordinate the area of digital policy with several other departments in the future. According to a five-page strategy paper from the Federal Chancellery, the government is relying on a “coordination group of the leading departments at state secretary level” “to coordinate digital policy cooperation in key priority projects”.
In addition to the Digital Ministry and the Chancellery, the departments for economics, internal affairs and finance are also represented in the group, the newspaper reported from the paper. In addition, the head of the Chancellery, the Social Democrat Wolfgang Schmidt, will be responsible for “the overarching strategic control of digitization in the federal administration” via the IT Council.

A digital budget planned for 2023 must also be shared by FDP Digital Minister Volker Wissing, the “Handelsblatt” continued. It will be coordinated by the digital and economic ministries “in coordination with the Federal Chancellery”, according to the paper. The budget is intended for 2023 to implement central projects of the digital strategy. According to the report, Wissing intends to present the strategy to the Federal Cabinet at the beginning of July.
In the coalition agreement, the SPD, Greens and FDP stated that Germany needed “a comprehensive digital awakening”. “To do this, we will set ourselves ambitious and verifiable goals and take realistic and quickly noticeable measures. Competences in the federal government will be reorganized and bundled, a central additional digital budget will be introduced and laws will be subjected to a digitization check.”
It was said from government circles that they wanted to make progress on previously controversial legislative projects to expand the infrastructure.
