If you want to shorten your nails as part of your manicure, you basically have several options: You can file them, cut them short or even snap them off. Which method is best for you depends a little on your own preferences, but also on the condition of your nails:

  • Fine or brittle nails: The best way to shorten brittle nails is with good nail scissors. It’s actually worth investing some money here – one high quality scissors ensures more precise cuts. If there are small cracks on the nail when cutting it, you can correct them with a nail file.
  • Thick and strong nails: Actually, we all want nails that are as strong as possible and rarely break. However, they can present us with a challenge when it comes to nail care, because classic nail scissors quickly reach their limits when it comes to thick fingernails. In that case, it’s better to use one Nail clippers and then carefully file away any remaining sharp corners.
  • Nail file as an all-rounder: With a good nail file, all nails can be shortened easily. Filing (especially with one Glass file) is gentle – as long as you make sure to always file in the same direction. Start with the coarse side for general trimming and then seal the nails with the fine side so that they don’t scratch.

In general, it is always a good idea to rework the nails with the fine side of the file, once you have shortened it to the desired length. It doesn’t matter whether you previously used nail scissors or nail clippers.

Do you want to get started straight away? No problem – here are our instructions for the right one Nail care in 5 easy steps!

1. Clean nails

In order to care for your nails, they must of course first be cleaned. If you still wear nail polish, use it first nail polish remover. You can decide for yourself whether you choose an acetone-free product or a variant containing acetone. Acetone is known to make nails brittle. But the acetone-free products often contain alternative solvents, which can also be problematic and cause skin irritation, for example. When using it, make sure to only apply the product to the nail and not accidentally to the sensitive cuticle.

Speaking of which: So that the cuticles can be treated better in the next step, give your hands a little bath. It’s best to use this Nail oil – Alternatively, you can also use olive oil or a cuticle remover from the drugstore. Soak your nails in the bath for about five to 10 minutes to soften the cuticles.

2. Treat cuticles

Now it’s time to get down to business: Since the cuticles have softened after the bath, you can now use one Cuticle pusher push back. Do this very gently so as not to accidentally injure yourself. And please do not use scissors to cut away the cuticles – in most cases this will only cause injuries and often associated inflammation.

3. Trim nails

You now know whether it’s best to shorten your nails with scissors or clippers. Of course, you can decide for yourself how long you want to wear your nails. However, in order for them to look well-groomed, they should at least a millimeter above the nail bed protrude.

4. File properly

Of course you can also choose which one shape your nails should have. However, a semicircular variant is usually found to be particularly practical as it avoids sharp edges or pointed corners. And this in turn reduces the risk of the nails tearing or breaking.

At the very end, as described above, use the fine side of a nail file, to literally give your nails the finishing touch. As a test, you can carefully run the nail over the tip of another finger – if it still feels scratchy, it’s best to file it again.
