Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan angers Beijing

Even before her visit was confirmed, the possibility of the visit of Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the United States House of Representatives, to Taiwan caused geopolitical shocks. Landing in Taipei on Tuesday, August 2, the American elected aroused strong reactions in Beijing.

According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, this visit “is a real farce” against Beijing. “Under the guise of ‘democracy’, the United States is undermining China’s sovereignty”, he added, from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Wednesday, August 3.

During her meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, Nancy Pelosi recalled that “American solidarity with Taiwan is crucial”. While Beijing multiplied parades and military exercises in response to this visit, Tsai Ing-wen assured that his island will not “will not back down” in front of “the persistent and deliberate escalation of military threats” from Beijing.
