Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) conquered all of Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The man, who is just 1.68 meters tall, went down in history as Emperor of France and a successful general. But every bright star burns up once: Napoleon died on May 5, 1821 on the English island of St. Helena. This marks the 200th anniversary of the death of the great ruler in 2021. In commemoration, the Italian island of Elba, on which Napoleon spent almost a year in exile in 1814, has set up its own program.

Historical parade, festivals and a special pass

Events, concerts and tours are planned all over the island for the summer and autumn, as it says on the island’s official website. For example, the Elba Isola Musicale d’Europa festival takes place from August 26th to September 12th. Among other things, a historical parade and a gala dinner with authentic costumes await visitors from August 22nd to 29th in Procchio during Napoleon Week. On October 1st the traditional grape festival takes place in Capoliveri, which this year is dedicated to the ruler. Interested parties can attend further events read in the program.

Another highlight: from June 30th to October 10th there is an exhibition at the Florence Uffizi Museum in the capital Portoferraio. Art lovers and those interested in history can marvel at pictures associated with the general. There is also a “Napoleonic Passport” for all tourists who want to follow in Napoleon’s footsteps. Anyone who has visited all ten stages by the end of their vacation and picked up a stamp will get a surprise.

The island is deeply rooted with the former emperor

The whole island is littered with historical places that played an important role in the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. One of them is the Spiaggia delle Viste beach, where he managed to escape in 1815. His winter residence, the Villa del Mulini palace in Portoferraio, is now a museum. The fortifications Forte Falcone and Forte Stella are also worth a detour.

Elba is deeply rooted with Napoleon as he carried out some reformations on the island. He had roads and bridges built, canals dug and forests reforested. To this day, the residents benefit from the efforts of the former emperor.

Elba is always worth a trip

Those who need a break from so many stories: Elba is also a paradise for nature lovers. The 224 square kilometer island impresses with its cliffs, extensive forests and a national park that extends over a total of seven islands. Holidaymakers get a magnificent view of Elba from the summit of the Capanne mountain. Sun worshipers can visit the island’s beautiful beaches. Marina di Campo is one of the most famous, while Padulella beach is more natural. The picturesque places, such as the capital Portoferraio, invite you to stroll and be amazed.
