Narges Mohammadi, 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, sentenced to one year in prison for “propaganda”

An additional conviction for the Iranian women’s rights activist. Imprisoned for almost three years in Iran, Narges Mohammadi, winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, was sentenced to one year in prison for “propaganda against the State”, announced his lawyer, Mostafa Nili, on XTuesday June 18.

“According to the verdict rendered by the 29e chamber of the revolutionary court of Tehran, Mme Narges Mohammadi was sentenced to one year in prison for propaganda against the state », explained Mr. Nili. For twenty-five years, Narges Mohammadi has been convicted and imprisoned several times because of her commitment against compulsory veiling for women and her opposition to the death penalty. In Iran, women have been required to follow a strict dress code requiring them to hide their hair in public places since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

On June 8, Narges Mohammadi refused to attend the hearing of his trial after unsuccessfully requesting that it be open to the public. Mr. Nili specified that his client had been tried for “his comments about Dina Ghalibaf [journaliste et étudiante iranienne qui avait accusé la police d’agression sexuelle] and on the boycott of the legislative elections » of March in Iran.

“Large-scale war against women”

From her prison, the 52-year-old activist broadcast an audio message in March in which she denounced a “full-scale war against women” in the Islamic Republic. She notably cited the case of Dina Ghalibaf, who, according to NGOs, was arrested in April after accusing the police on social networks of having sexually assaulted her during an arrest in the metro.
