NASA, in the midst of changing its internet communication, is launching its own video-on-demand service on November 8. Everything will be free, and if you like space activities, you should be served! It will also host live broadcasts and most of the activities currently covered by NASA TV.
NASA is one of the agencies trying hardest to stay on the cutting edge of communications. Its (public) funding depends on it, but also the recruitment of its talents and quite simply, it is a question of showing its progress over time. But the agency is sprawling, it has 64 years of archives and different centers…
Over the years there have been several attempts to bring together sites, information and media as much as possible. The title site, nasa.gov, has changed its visual signature for several weeks, and it’s not over: this time, it’s the turn of the NASA TV service to change its setting. The American agency will therefore launch NASA+, its own video-on-demand platform.
Dreaming on NASA+
Whether it’s live broadcasts, spacewalks, takeoffs or reports on different missions, NASA+ will eventually bring together all of the agency’s video productions. Precisely, the latter are difficult to find today, divided between YouTube, short extracts on X.com (ex Twitter) or sometimes Facebook directs, as well as internal servers with numerous clips which are lost in the image archives.
The ambition is to bring everything together and put them on the same platform open to the public. NASA+ will therefore have its own visual identity, will not require any special access and will be free, just like what the American agency already offers for all its open content.
What exact form for the content?
If NASA+ and its catalog will be available directly on the agency’s website, it should not transform into a completely independent service like Netflix, Disney+ or its competitors. The agency’s videos could even be integrated on other platforms like the catalogs exchanged between major service providers: there is already talk of seeing them on Apple TV+, Fire TV and Roku , in the USA…
Even if they will remain available on the NASA web portal anyway. There are also some questions, in particular on the presence of complete documentaries which have already enabled the American agency to win prestigious prizes such as the Emmy Awards. There is movement at the end of 2023 in the world of SVoD. Netflix has (again) increased its prices, the same goes for Apple TV+, Prime Video and Disney+ have given in to the lure of advertising while increasing their prices, and the latter has even split its single subscription into three. The ideal opportunity to take stock and re-rank the best video streaming platforms!
