Doctor convicted of abuse stabbed to death

In 2017, Larry Nassar pleaded guilty to years of sexual violence against US gymnasts. In 2021, his victims will be awarded $380 million. Now the doctor, who was sentenced to 175 years in prison, has apparently been seriously injured.

Doctor Larry Nassar, convicted of years of sexual abuse of US gymnasts, including record world champion Simone Biles-Owens, was stabbed multiple times in prison in Wildwood, Florida. According to Joe Rojas, chairman of the local correctional officers’ union, Nassar, 59, is “in stable condition, as far as I’m aware”. Nassar was stabbed twice in the neck, six times in the chest and twice in the back, according to Rojas. The US broadcaster ABC also reported that his condition was stable.

The Bureau of Prisons (BoP) declined to confirm that Nassar had been assaulted for privacy reasons, but when asked said “an inmate” was assaulted at Coleman Prison at 2:35 p.m. Sunday and taken to a local hospital had been. Neither officials in prison nor other detainees were injured in the incident, it is being investigated internally.

“The staff immediately initiated life-saving measures,” the prison officials said in a statement. “The staff called for emergency medical services and life-saving efforts continued.” The FBI, the central security agency in the United States, has been notified, it said. An internal investigation has also begun.

Nassar, a veteran physician with the American Gymnastics Federation, was sentenced to a total of 175 years in prison in three trials. Nassar’s victims secured a $380 million settlement with USA Gymnastics in 2021, one of the largest settlements ever given to victims of abuse. More than 150 girls and women were heard in the process, including several Olympic champions. Nassar pleaded guilty in November 2017.
