Pope Francis has appointed Nathalie Becquart as undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops, making her the first woman to have the right to vote in the assembly responsible for studying the major doctrinal questions of the Catholic Church.

Nathalie Becquart is a French nun from the Xavières congregation. Since 2019, she has been a consultant to the Synod, the assembly of bishops responsible for studying the major doctrinal questions of the Catholic Church. Yesterday, Saturday February 6, 2021, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis has appointed her as Undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops. She is the first woman to obtain this position!

Nathalie Becquart also becomes the first woman to obtain the right to vote within the Synod. "During the last synods, the number of women who participated as experts or listeners increased. With the appointment of Sister Nathalie Becquart and her possibility of participating with the right to vote, a door has been opened ", declared the Secretary General of the Synod, Cardinal Mario Grech, questioned by the media of the Holy See.

Nathalie Becquart was born and raised in Fontainebleau before graduating from HEC. The nun studied philosophy and theology at the Center Sèvres – Jesuit Faculties in Paris, as well as sociology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). According to the site Vatican News, she also completed a specialization in ecclesiology at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, in the United States. According to Mario Grech, the appointment of the French nun demonstrates the current pope's desire to promote "greater participation of women in ecclesial discernment and decision-making processes". At the beginning of January, the Sovereign Pontiff also issued a decree allowing women to take part in readings and in the service of Mass.
