National Council Canton Lucerne – Surprise at the expense of the GLP: SP gets second seat – News

The SP emerged as the big winner in the elections in Lucerne. The GLP loses its only seat in the National Council.

You couldn’t necessarily expect that. The SP gets a second National Council seat. The big loser is GLP: its National Councilor Roland Fischer was not re-elected.

A total of nine seats were up for grabs in Lucerne. Three of them became vacant: Ida Glanzmann (center), Prisca Birrer-Heimo (SP) and Yvette Estermann (SVP) decided not to run again.

There is great joy at the SP

The SP is now appointing two new national councilors: cantonal president David Roth and cantonal councilor Hasan Candan. The latter is overwhelmed: “It’s unbelievable. I feel a lot of joy.”

The SP’s success in these federal elections is due to years of development work, says David Roth.

It’s incredible. I feel a lot of joy.

The cantonal president and new national councilor says that after Prisca Birrer-Heimo’s resignation there is no longer an SP woman in the National Council: “Hasan Candan and I have been politicizing in the cantonal council for twelve years. We benefited from this notoriety.”

SVP, Center and Greens can keep their seats. At the SVP, the previous Franz Grüter and the new Vroni Thalmann won the race.

The middle is still represented by the previous members Leo Müller and Priska Wismer. Pius Kaufmann is also new. Michael Töngi has been re-elected from the Green Party and FDP National Councilor Peter Schilliger can also keep his seat.

The center in the canton of Lucerne now has three National Council mandates, the SVP and the SP two and the FDP and the Greens one each.

Bitter pill for Roland Fischer

For Roland Fischer, this day is déjà vu: Fischer failed to get re-elected in 2015, but he regained the seat in 2019. Now he has to vacate his seat again.

It’s a bit like winning, losing like that.

Roland Fischer is disappointed. But he also knew that he had to expect this scenario: “It’s a bit like winning, losing like that. We won the seat relatively narrowly four years ago. We had to reckon with the fact that we would lose share of the electorate if the issue situation went against us.”
