- As part of an international “Day of Action for Palestine”, demonstrations took place in several cities around the world – including Basel.
- Around 2,000 people gathered in De-Wette-Park near the SBB train station for the national pro-Palestinian rally.
- The demonstration has been approved by the authorities.
The Federation of Switzerland-Palestine called for the rally. The call was co-signed by around a hundred organizations, from various Palestine committees to far-left parties and queer feminist movements.
The participants are calling, among other things, for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, economic sanctions against Israel and the cessation of Switzerland’s cooperation with Israel on a scientific level. As the Basel-Stadt cantonal police write on X, they assume around 1,500 to 2,000 participants.
Keywords such as “apartheid”, “genocide”, “Hands off Lebanon” and “Israël assassin” were repeated [Israel Attentäter]» chanted. Among other things, the controversial slogan “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” could be read on banners, which was also often shouted by the crowd.
The demonstration was peaceful until it ended at the Basel barracks area shortly after 4:30 p.m. With the exception of a small dialogue team, the police remained invisible in the background throughout the rally.
