Sedition, property damage, bodily harm – the number of attacks on asylum seekers fell in 2021 compared to the previous year. This is shown by preliminary statistics on violent crimes recorded by the police. The decline could have something to do with the protests against the corona measures.

The number of attacks on asylum seekers and refugees has decreased in the past year. However, the number of cases in which those seeking protection become victims of violent crime is still relatively high, as a response from the federal government to a parliamentary question from the left-wing faction shows.

According to the preliminary statistics, which the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” first reported, the police counted more than 1,250 crimes against asylum seekers, refugees and their accommodations nationwide last year, most of them with right-wing motivations. The federal government did not provide any information on the possible reasons for the decline – in the previous year the authorities had reported 1,690 attacks on refugees and accommodation for asylum seekers.

According to the security authorities, right-wing extremist groups have mobilized several times in the past year for protest actions against government measures to contain the corona pandemic. In 2016, when the public debate about the so-called refugee crisis revolved around the topic of asylum and immigration, the police had counted 3,500 criminal offenses against those seeking protection and asylum seeker accommodation.

The offenses that are statistically recorded in connection with such attacks include hate speech, property damage and bodily harm. According to the federal government, violence was used against asylum seekers and refugees in 223 cases last year. 156 people were injured.

After an arson attack on a home for asylum seekers in Simbach am Inn, Lower Bavaria, last October, a 42-year-old was arrested. He is being investigated for attempted murder. “We must never get used to refugees being insulted, humiliated, attacked and injured,” said Clara Bünger, a politician on the domestic front. She called for a right to stay for victims of racist violence.
