TIRANA (Reuters) – Albania is in talks with NATO to build a naval base in Porto Romano, a port on the Adriatic coast, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Friday.

He said that Porto Romano, whose development aims to make it the largest port in Albania, would include a commercial area and a military base.

The latter would be built and co-financed by NATO and Albania, said Edi Rama during a press conference.

“We will soon return to Brussels to continue discussions regarding our proposal to install a NATO naval base in our new port in Durrës”, added the Prime Minister.

Porto Romano is located north of Durrës, Albania’s second largest city and the country’s main port.

The Albanian government had proposed in May to NATO to use its naval base of Pashaliman, which is about 200 km south of the Albanian capital, Tirana.

NATO is already working on the reconstruction of the Kucova air base, 80 km south of Tirana, which will be used by the Alliance.

Albania joined NATO in 2009.
